Among the New Zealand soldiers killed in the railway catastrophe hear (Plymouth (England) was Cjhudleigh Kirton, youngest son of Mr. R„ Kirton, of Fitzroy, and a well-known settler in the Uruti district. He left with the 28ths, and with them had only arrived in England on Monday, and with 8 of his comrades shared an awful fate, before even being afforded an opportunity of upholding the cause to which they had manfully pledged >their young lives. As a boy, Chudleigh Kirton was extremely popular among his schoolmates, bright tand kindly in disposition, and full of promise for a successful future. The greatest sympathy is felt for his bereaved par« ents and kin. - .

A list of commissioned and non-com* missioned officers promoted while on active service was issued in Wellington oil Thursday. The promotions date back to January last, the delay in publication being due to unforeseen circumstances.
