WHANGAMOMONA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The council met at To Wera 011 Tuee. day. 'Present: Crs. W. A. McCutcheon (chair), M. Geever, J. M. O'Neill, U. It. Cleland, H. McLeod, T. R. Mounsey, A. Coyne and J. McCluggage.. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer, Mr. E. C. Robinson, reported: Mounsey's bridge over (he Wangaehu stream is approaching completion. The Whangainomona, township bridge is proceeding steadily, but the lack of hardwood timber, if arrival is delayed, may hang up the work. Regarding the bridge over the Makahu stream for Mr. J. O'Connor, the access road 1i?,7 been examined, and this would require :ui expenditure of ,-£2O to put in order. Ml'. O'Connor is satisfied with a low-level bridge, and this could be erected with comparative safety. Ho had inspected two bridges erected by the Government 10 to 12 years ago, and were showing sign 3of decay. Repairs should be attended to without delay. He thought the Public Works Department should! havn its attention drawn to tht* matte*. Roads had been inspected, and generally wera in good order. Regarding the Whitianga road, where it has been slipping away into the Mauku stream, he had made careful examination, and found I 1 that tho growth of willows on the opposite bank of the stream has had nothing to do with the subsidence of the outer portion of the road.
He submitted figures regarding the icouncil's financial position, and stated ■they had £2130 to operate on for, say, the next, nine months. This worked out at £230 per month out of general revenue, whilst rouchly the expenditure 1 was at £lB5, leaving a margin for contingencies, and if tho council can make this tho average, tho finances will he kept within reasonable bounds.—Received. On tho motion of Crs. Coyne and O'Neilt, the engineer was instructed to interview Mr. .T. O'Connor, and expldin the council's financial difficulties: also to offer to provide hardwood for a bridcro applied for by applicant, who is to pay cost of labor and rest of material, iinsi also temporarily pay freight and cartage until such time as the council is able to refund such freight and cartage out of Government subsidy on the Brewer road loan, the estimated cost of labor aim material being £35. The engineer was also nenuested to interview the Public Works Department re refilling two bridges on Kohuratahi road.
CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were received from Messrs W. Jennings and H. Okey, M.'sP., and the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, re tho Tahora—Tatu telephone. After considering applications received for increase in wages by some of the council employees, a resolution was carried: "That applicants be informed that as the council's term of office ends next month, thr- question be deferred until the new council is elected. All outstanding rates are to he sued for. The county clerk (A. Coleman) was instructed tq prepare a statement showing the position of Tidings at the time various roads were declared to be main roads. Accounts totalling £2Bl 12s 5d were passed for payment.
