This morning a number of friends of Mr. J. Petrie met at Mr. Smith's ten rooms to make a presentation to tlieir guest. The Mayor (-Mr. J. W. McMillan) presjUi:u, and said this was the liust occasion on which they would have Mr. Petrie with them as a single man, and ho and others desired to congratulate him on the step he had taken., Mr. -Pottie had been a member of the main body, and had been in the firing lino, and now was settling down to married life, and it was oniy right that they should show their appreciation of him as a soldier and a resident. His Worship said their guest was setting a good example to other returned soldiers in marrying, and concluded by wishing Mr. Petrie and his fiancee (Miss O'Taole) a happy and prosperous | career. Others testifying their appreciation and good wishes were Crs. Campbell -Tackson and J. H. Thompson, and i Messrs H. Wilson, S. Sharp, J. Pettie, 3. j Kivell, B. Sawles, A. D. Stanley anit Dick Masters (the latter also a returned soldier). The Mayor then presented Mr. Petrie with a cose of pipes and pouch, and after an informal chat, during which advice was freely offered, Mr. Petrie briefly, but feelingly, replied, and the company adjourned.
GENERAL. Quite a, number of Cl' and C2 men aro leaving here to-morrow (Friday) for examination before the special Medical Board sitting at Hawera. A Stratford team of footballers met and defeated an Eltham fifteen on the latter's grounds this afternoon. In the first spell Dudding scored a try. which Kivell converted. In the second half Kivell and Bailey kicked penalty goals, making the score: Stratford 11 points, Eltham nil. Mr. Judd was referee. The Mayor officially welcomed home Lieut. C. W. Milner, who is on furlough, at the station last evening. The fire brigade also turned out in honor of their comrade, whom they found in very good health. Private O'Connell. of Toko, was 1 also officially welcomed by the Mayor and congratulated on his safe return. Private J. Davis, of Kohuratahi, a man under 20, received it hot and strong in the fighting round La Bassee. He is now at Brockenhurst hospital recovering from his wounds. In this engagement young Davis showed particular pluck, receiving no less than nine wounds. Some of these were in the chest, but, despite this, he refused to leave the trenches until the Germans made their counterattack, his pluck and fortitude being much admired by his comrades. He had two brothers, D. and J., also at the front, but both have since been invalided home. T. LAMASON'S WEEKLY REPORT.
