NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
; " WORKS COMMITTEE. " r A meeting of the Works Committee ' of the New Plymouth Iforough Council was held last night. ' Present: The Mavor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Crs. J. Clarke, E. Griffiths, J. W. Harden, W. F. Short, E. Griffiths, W. A. Colli*, R. J. Deare, and G. W. Browne. The report of the Streets Sub-Commit-tee, previously published and held over for consideration from tho preceding meeting of the council, was dealt with clause by clause, and adopted.
The Ven. Archdeacon Evans, as chairman of the committee of the Minister's Association, wrote that details had been arranged for the service at a national day of prayer on October 7. He invited the Mayor, Mayoress, and councillors to attend, and asked that Everybody's Picture Theatre should he engaged for the occasion.—Left in the hands of the Mavor.
The Citizens' Band asked perr.iission to take up a collection at a recrtal to be given in Kawaroa Park on Sunday next. —Agreed to. The town clerk reported that, at the suggestion of the Mayor, he had written to the borough solicitors asking their opinion as to whether there was any statutory authority enabling the council to expend money for the erection of seaside cotages. The solicitors had advised that the counoil had no power 10 erect buildings on land not owned by the borough,.but held on a tenancy tciminablc by nominal notice.—Referred to the Reserves Committee. Cr. Griffiths, referred to the fact that he had been convicted and fined for leaving his motor-car in King Street unattended for more than five minutes. He suggested that fifteen minutes should be allowed, and that a notice should be put up in King Street notifying which was the proper side of that thoroughfars to "park" ears—The Mayor said the borough solicitors had the matter of redrafting the by-law in hand. It had never been intended that the provision with reference to leaving vehicles unattended should apply to motor cars.
