ELTHAM.

OVERSEAS CLUB'S CONCERT. (From Our Own Correspondent). Eltham, Sept. 22. That it pays to get the best available talent was demonstrated at the Town Hall last night, when the building held one of the largest audiences ever assembled there. The programme was a lengthy one, and the items well worthy of the occasion. The Rev Papakakura was in great request, and scored a signal success in his items, "In Spring Time" and If Thou Wert Blind." He was honored • with several recalls. Mrs. M. J. Goodson (Hawera) was also very successful in her solo, "Ah, Faithless One," and had to respond to an encore; whilst the Stratford soloist, "Mrs. Massey, was obliged to contribute a second item to appease the audience. The comic element was largely in the hands of the Stratford* comediau, Frank Sanford, and the audi- ,' ence were loath to let him go, Ave recalls being needed before the .programme could proceed. His dramatic recitation, "Kitchener," with musical accompani-' »■ ment, was also a treat. The orchestral selections by 'Professor Higham's band were much appreciated, as was also the dancing and posturing of the Hawera •=• ladies, Misses Lynne Edwards and Betty Jacomb. Mr. Silver (Rawhitiroa) contributed two very acceptable coon songs, and showed talent well above amateur standard. Mrs. McLaren (Toko) was also very happy in her solo work, and, like the others, had to repeat a number. Indeed, encores prolonged the already lengthy programme unduly, but this did not disturb the performers or audience. At the close of the entertainment the ' Mayor (Mr. T. B. Crump) expressed his appreciation of the support accorded by the public that evening, also to the performers and to motor-car owners for bringing the entertainers to Eltham. The result should permit the Overseas Club to _show a fair sum for the Blind Soldiers' Hostel, for the funds of which the entertainment was held.
