STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] ... BUTTER-PAT CONTEST. The Stratford A. and P. Association is introducing a milk and butter-fat contest. The idea has been before the executive for some months, and now is about to be set in motion. Farmers can nominate not more than two cows from their herds, and then, choosing a period themselves, notify the Association, who will send stewards to supervise three consecutive milkings, with a lapse of twelve hours between each milking. The yield will be weighed and tests submitted to an expert, and then the ten co ws making tlie best total in points are to be shown in the A .and P. competition riny on show dates. To encourage interest in the contest £ll is to be given in three prizes. When in the show arena, some first-class animals have not done justice to their owners and breeding owing to timidity, etc., and to obviate this the present contest is being conducted. Details will be fully discussed at the meeting to-morrow (Saturday). Mr. Newton King's staff are pegging out the grounds to be worked to-morrow, and word reaches me that there are to be some unique exhibitions in Broadway. Considerable interest was taken in the Daily News this morning. The Licensing Bill voting seemed to attract more attention than the Russian muddle. A reminder is given of the meeting of the Farmers' Union at the secretary's office to-morrow at 11.30 a.m. The fortnightly eUchre party and dance held at Midhirst last night attracted a good attendance. The early portion of the evening was devoted to cards, Mrs Tapp winning the trophy for ladies and Mr. J. Shotter that given to the gentleman registering most wins. For the dance that followed Miss Anderson provided enjoyable music, and the M'sC., Messrs J. Shotter and F. Carter saw that all present passed a pleasant evening. At the S.M. Court this afternoon, on the application of defendant, the charge of neglecting to look after a heifer was adjourned for a week.—T. Sullivan, licensee of the Club Hotel, for supplying liquor to a man under 21 years, was fined £2. J. Stanford, Huiroa, charged with «llowing five horses to wander on the railway line, was fined £l. A man named Groves, charged with false pretences at Eltham, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. The Stratford school hockey girls met Eltham yesterday at Eltham. The Eltham girls were unable to muster .a team and obtained the assistance of several boys, and this combination was too strong for the Stratford girls, who were defeated by 7 goals to 3. Those scoring for Stratford were Ivy Boon, Hazel Carroll, and Phyllis Wells. There is no time like the present. It is yours, and the wise man is he who makes the most of the opportunity. Just now the opportunity of making a little cash go a long way is presented at Mr. C. E. James' warehouse. Prices are down to bedrock, whilst quality is of the highest. Ladies, don't neglect this chance of securing best leather handbags, jewellery, wedding presents, etc., now offering. Call and inspect when next in town.
