RIFLE SHOOTING.

WHANGAMOMONA DEFEATS NEW (PLYMOUTH. A team of eight men from the New Plymouth Defence Rifle Club journeyed to Whangamomona on Wednesday afternoon, and made an attempt to wrest from the Whangamomona Rifle Club the challenge shield which, after being held by Patea and Ifaponga for several years, was recently taken out east by Tahora, from whom the present holders annexed it. The team proceeded to the range at about 6.30 a.m., as it was intended to complete the match in time to catch the 10.40 train back to to'wn. Unfortunately a heavy fog prevented a start being made until about 9 a.m. The light was very dazzling, whilst the varying wind added to the difficulty, especially of the visitors, the range being situate: in a valley, and this made it very tricky. Shooting on both sides was poor, 'but Whangamomona proved more consistent and won by 17 points. At 200 yards New Plymouth led by 11 points, but at 800 yards this was reduced to 2 points. At 600 yards Whangamomona gained the advantage of 19 points. Scores:— Whangamomona.

, ! The visitors were most hospitably entertained by the local team. At the conclusion of the match Pres. F. J. Hill eon- ; gratulated Whangamomona on their win, » and intimated that New Plymouth would • probably visit Whangamomona in quest i vof the shield at a later date. He also • | expressed the thanks of the members ! : for the courtesy extended by the local ■ ! men in agreeing to start early in the 1 ! morning. President Bacon responded. • The New Plymouth team returned home > i yesterday. ■ j =====
