VARIOUS CHARGES. 'At the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. A. Crooke, SM., a Maori named Huri Inia pleaded guilty to having at (Parihaka during October of last year stolen a. bag of gross feed. On his undertaking to make restitution he was convicted ana ordered to coma up for sentence when) tailed upon. AN OLD OFFENDER.

George droves, alias Williams, pleaded guilty to a charge of having on Juiy 19 obtained the sum of £lO Ss from Edward McGinty, licensee of the (Irosvpiior Hotel, New Plymouth, by means of false pretences, namely, a cheque purp-vtiug to be signed by George Groves, dairy manager, Elthan'i.

Mr. Johnstone appeared for the prisoner, but said he found it difficult to urge anything in favor of a man against whom there were seven previous convictions for offences of a similar class. He might .suggest however, that Groves-' was ready and willing to enlist. Sub-Inspector Mcllveney said Croves' criminal Tecord dated back to IHOO. Ha was a habitual criminal who had received consideration from the Prison Board, and had been liberated on parole. His previous convictions had all been for forgeries, and he had a further charge to aaswer at Eltham ito-dav (Friday).

His Worship imposed a sentence of three months imprisonment with hard labor. ALLEGED CRUELTY. John Smith was charged with having on September 10. at Motviroa, cruelly ill-treatc] a horse belonging to Walter Smitf 'by violently kicking it on tho stomacn several timea and 'heating it with a stable ■broom. *

Mr. P. E. Wilson appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty, stating that he had found the hor.se close to his wharc on the beach late at night and had struck it lightly with a viewto driving it away. Evidence having been taken, his Warship convicted the defendant and ordered him to pay costs amounting to £1 3s.
