NEW AMERICAN WAR SONG.
The entrance of the United States into the European conflict is heralded by the Duplication of a real war song written by a Marylander, Daniel M. Henderson, whose poem has been awarded the National Arte IClub prize. The title, "The Road to France." is incorporated in the theme with a ringing vigor. The first verse of the new song reads :-vd . . Thank God; our liberating lance Goes flaming on the way to France! To France —the, trail the Gurkas found! To France—old England's rallying sound! To France—the .path the Russians strode! To France—the Anzacs' glory road! To France—where our Lost Legion ran To fight and die for God and man! To France—with every race and breed That hates Oppression's 'brutal creed! "The Road to France" seems the fir3t war song in the English language worthy of the times.' It is certainly more likely to appeal to the average soldier than the splendid 'but difficult "Battle Hymn of the Republic." But after all the tune's the thing; a war song to be sung and to live must be set to something of the "Marsellaise" fire and vigor. '
