A GENERAL ELECTION.
- DISCUSSED BY UPiPEB HOUSE By Wire.—Our Parliamentary Reporter Wellington, Last Night, When the Parliamentary Reprg»ehtation Adjustment Bill was uudei discussion in the Legislative Council thi* after* noon the Hon. J. T. Paul moved an amendment designed to bring about a general election this year. The Amend* ment, after some discussion, was defeated on tho voices. Hon, Sir Francis Bell said he regarded 'the proposal as Simpte nonsense. Members of the National Government were not. shirking an election, but if they went to the country now the two ahief parties would have to ob»erve the compact not to fight one another during the - life of the Government they both supported, and ■ the electors, consequently, would be asked to choose between a National Government and the Labor party. An election on those lines )vould not lie. a test of public opinion at all.
