STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent,) [All communications, letters, eto., left With Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive' prompt attention.] Stratford, Sept. 13. The Ladies' Committee had another good day on Saturday, the takings being: Tea rooms, £G lCs 7d, and mart £7 ISs Lid. Those assisting were: Mesdames Boor and Jcnkinson, Misses M. and F. Clemow, Smart, Street, Blizzard and Robson.

Nest Saturday Mr. Newton King's firm are making a big effort on behalf of patriotic funds. No less than four shops will be controlled by the firm, which will dispose of a large and varied assortment of .merchandise that should find a ready sale. Mr. T. D. Colaon ha* generously consented to grant liis sen-ices and shop for the sale of meat, whilst the premises of Dr. Paget and Mr. E. Dixon are also placed at the disposal of the staff, and the ordinary patriotic mart will likewise be in full swing. Apart from the shops, but with the same end in view, a rifle-shooting galhary, houp-la competition and slieep-guessing will be in full swing. The ladies will bo interested to learn that home-made jam, iced cakes, etc., will be available for purchase, besides other necessaries to the dining table. An advertisement concerning the "rally" appears on the first page. Judging from appearances, the S.M. (Mr. A. Crookc) will have a busy afternoon here neit Ifriday. If all the cases set down for decision are to be heard, the proceedings should be lengthy, if not interesting. One is glad to note that Mr. C. S. KeUy, formerly of the Stratford Post's literary staff, is able to move around once more. He was busy hand-shaking with many friends glad to renew acquaintance with the ex-soldier. His injuries appear to be very severe, and it does not seem likely that he will ha able to discard the crutches for some considerable time. The County Council will hold its monthly meeting oij Wednesday. A band without a drum would be something of a novelty. The Stratford Town Band at one period looked like being in that predicament, but fortunately things have changed. Recently the band received a fine bass drum, the gift of Mr. Cecil Arden, of this town. The drum arrived at an opportune time, being used by the band at Sapper Jones meeting. Members of the band are grateful to the donor for the sift, and, now the drum difficulty has been removed. would find the gift of a baritone instrument very acceptable. It may be stated that the band is doing its best to keep moving, but, owing to the war and tbe changeable population, it is.hard to retain enthusiasm. Add to this the need of soma new instruments, and outsiders will understand the difficulties of conductor and members. Some of us may not be able to blow notes from an instrument, but perhaps a few may be able to extract a few from their purse or pocket-book, and if these are sent along to the secretary, the band may soon have a fine baritone to keep the bass drum company.

There is no time like the present. It is yours, and the wise man is he who makes the most of the opportunity. Just now the opportunity of making a little cash go a long way is presented at Mr. C. E. James' warehouse. Prices are down to bedrock, whilst quality is of the highest. Ladies, don't neglect this chance of securing best leather handbags, jewellery, wedding presents, etc., now offering. Call and inspect when next in town.
