THE MISSING WAIRUNA. | HOPE PRACTICALLY ABANDONED. ! In shipping circles very little hope is I entertained- that the Union S.S. Co.'a ! missing cargo steamer Wairuna is r>till | afloat (says the Dominion). The vessel, | which had a mixed general cargo shipj ped at Sydney, Wellington, and Auckj land, cleared the latter port for San ! Francisco on May 30, and since then has | not been heard of. In view of the fact j that she liad lately been litted with a wireless plant (having a radius of 500 miles), and that had anything of a usual | character checked her progress (such as a broken shaft or other mishap to her I machinery), something was almost bound to have been heard of the steamer. It is generally surmised that she has probably been stink by an internal explosion, deliberately arranged or otherwise. Ordinarily tiie Wairuna would make tlie
passage from Auckland to San Franciac? jn about 28 days. She has now been out for IM days. The Wairuna was in charge of Captain. •Saunders, who is well known in Wellington and on the coast, having been in the jfervico of the company for some years. Captain Saunders has bean married for less than a year. T)iC Wairuna, (ex Matoppa) was a steel screw steamer of 3947 tons gross, and rating 100 A 1 afc Lloyd's. She was built in IWM by Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., at Newcaatle-on-TyiiiO, England. ,Her»principal dimensions were.: —Lcngtfi, 300 ft; beam, 47ft sin, and depth 2(sft Tin. She was a good. carrier of her class, aJid has dono good service for the Union S.S. Co. in the coal and general cargo trade between Australia and New Zealand, and latterly between the Dominion and America.
