(By "Moturoa"). Firsl-cla 1 " acceptances are carded for all events to 1,0 decided at the Dannevi'rke Hunt Club wet'mg to-day, and rncir.g should be of a?i interesting description. If hunters of tfw calibre of Mattock, Gaekwar and Chaban. and hacks like Vermillion. Fabrenui, Bioomine and Pergola go to the pest, there promises to be some snh'ited betting. As an instance of the usefulness of "oliicial" times at some of these country meetings, it may be mentioned that ouite recently in a "two miles" steeplcthe lmrw w;erp started from the two and a half miles post, and actually ran the greater distance. Fortunately for the winner nobody noticed anything until it was too late. The ti;ne, omins., gave the show away, however. A correspondent writes wanting to know if something cannot be done to round up those hcrseowncrs who apparently only enter their horses at various meetings for the benefit of the bookmakers. Unfortunately, no. Racing clubs accept no. liability, and rightly so. Ante-post wagering cannot be recognised. and those who indulge in it take the "all in" risk themselves. That the bookmakers "buy" certain horses is commonly believed, but proof is impossible to obtain. At any meeting you will see the eleventh-hour scratching of horses that have never left their boxes, many days' iourney from the course. Their owners certainly knew days before that, they ha<l no intention of starting their prads, but there is no law to compel them to "split." This in where the Bar Vons fatten and the Smart Alecs drift swiftly down the long, long trail to moleskins and dungarees. Otaki acceptances; published in yesterday's News, are good all round, and the fields are well sprinkled with Taran£iki horses. I.ady Louisa and Orleans appear to be well treated in the big Hat handicap, and Lady Beaufort, Coalition, Bloomine and Chakwana are not overweighted in the minor events. The meeting does not eventuate till September 24.
