VIOLENT ARTILLERY DUEL.
FRENCH SUCCESSES. London, Sept. 10. A French communique says:—The artillery duel continued violently all night on both bunks of the Meuse. We completed the success of September 8 in the sector of the Fosses and Caurieres Woods. We overcame the resistance of isolated groups and took more prisoners, The Germans have not renewed their attempts here. The importance of the enemy's defeat yesterday is confirmed. He counter-at-tacked successively with great fury, despito extremely heavy losses owing to our lire. We repolled ; at several points, as many as five successive attacks. London, Sept. 10. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We consolidated the positions captured yesterday south-cast ward oi Hargieourt, and drovo off raiders eastward o: Loos and Aynentieres. London, Sept 10, A wireless German official message says:—The English jpresseil us back at Hargieourt and Villenet. We regained the former position. We penetrated the French lines east of Samogneux. 1 London, Sept. 10. A German official message says;— During August we lost lj-1 aeroplanes and our enemies lost 295. ENEMY RAIDS. ! Sir Douglas Haig reports: We took prisoner a few ui the neighborhood of Lagnicourt, also south-eastward of St. Julien. The enem.y raided an advanced post of ours south-eastward of St. Jans hoek. Wo re-established our position, There has been reciprocal artillerying eastward of Ypres. We brought dowii 'seven aeroplanes. Five of ours arCinissing. Sir Douglas Haig J s dispatch mentions, among others, the following incident, indicating the general nature of the work at I'oux: A New l Zealand non-com., on August 24, swam a river, reconnoitring for five and a half hours. He found a faft, whereon he returned, and later led a patrol across and surprised a German post, killing the occupants and returning safely. A French communique says: On the right bank of the Meuse there has been lively artillery duels in the region of 'Hill 344 and the Bois des Fosses. Cap'tain Guynemer destroyed his fiftieth German aeroplane.
