TARANAKI IRONSAND.
SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS. Operations at the Taranaki Ironsand Company's works, which had to be discontinued on Tuesday last, in order to permit of slight defects being remedied, were resumed on Sunday afternoon, when the furnace was again charged and the blast turned on, the first tapping taking place about 8 p.m., when there was a very good run of abo.ut half a ton of iron. Up till mid-day yesterday there had been seven runs, and there* after throughout the day and night several tappings were made, with gratifying results. In the early tappings there was a little trouble experienced, owing to excessive moisture, caused by the ground round the furnace having been saturated by the continuous rain, and there, was also a slight leakage in the water jacket, but Mr. Heskett overcame these defects, and each tapping proved better than its predecessor The "fines" that caused the trouble at the first trial have been absent, and at present everything is proceeding very satisfactorily, the men rapidly becoming more proficient in their work. It is intended to run the works continuously. Mr. G. Fraser, of Auok'and, who has been in New Plymouth since Friday watching operations, is very favorably impressed with the rosults achieved.
