THE SUBMARINE CAMPAIGN.
A SENSATOINAL STORY. MERCHANT SHIPS v. U BOATS. New York, Sept. 7. The Tribune says that four merchantmen have arrived at an Atlantic port. The officers stated that a fleet of 22 Allied merchantmen while sailing to America were attacked in clear weather. Suddenly two periscopes were sighted, one on each side of the fleet. The Ulioats immediately launched torpedoes. One struck the merchant flagship, which sank within the hour; another hit the stern of a second merchantmen,, which sank in half-an-hour. The other merchantmen opened fiio and quickly sank the pair of U-boats, whereupon five other U-boats emerged and launched torpedoes, quickly submerging as the merchantmen fired. The officers say that one of these U-boats was positively sunk. Two additional merchantmen were struck and sank. A wireless message brought destroyers, the merchantmen were convoyed back and later sailed to America singly. i
