SOME STRIKING FIGURES. Last year the New Zealand railways earned £MO per mile in the North Island and only £409 in the South. In the south the balance of revenue over expenditure is £701.063, while in the north, with 468 fewer miles of track, the balance is £1,171,09!). These fact* have been extracted from the Railway Statement by the Auckland Herald, which has constantly urged the extension of lines in the North. It goes on to show that there are 1240 miles of open line in the North Island system, and 1714 miles in the South Island. In the south the balance of revenue over expenditure is £701,603, while in the north, with 403 fewer miles of track, the balance is £1,171,098. Worked out at per mile we have the following result:— Every North Island system mile earns, net £940 Every South Island system mile earns, net .. ~ ~ £409 Taking the main lines and brandies only, the figures show that in actual profit the 1108 miles of the Northern Main Trunk
