The Dannevirke Racing Club and Hunt Club will hold their meetings on the former's course at Tamaki on Wednesday and Thursday next. Taranaki entries for these gatherings were hardly as numerous as might have been expected, but the majority of those entered have been paid up for. Racing at Marton has exposed form somewhat, but penalties of 71b for flat winners and 101b for winners over sticks should even matters up, The Otanga Handicap, nine furlongs, has attracted sixteen. Lady Louisa is in fine fettle, as sho showed at Marton, and reads well with Sst. Chuckle, who was on the course, but was not started owing to the heavy going on Wednesday, has a big reputation, hut whether he will maintain it remains in seen. A fine crowd figure in the Spri.i;;' Handicap, six furlongs, but recent form docs not shed much light on the event. Rauinamnvhiri. Hushabyc and Rose Pink may be as seasoned as any of the likely runners. Tlie minor events have all filled well. -Signorella is not likely to want for backers if saddled up for the Trial Slakes, 5.1 furlongs, while Iceberg should start favorite in the Jumpers' Flat race, ly t miles. Bloomine and Nobleman are nicely treated in the Umutaoroa Hack Handicap, fi furlongs, and Nobleman and Welshman in the Hack Welter. Colorado's bold showing this week is sure to draw attention to his engagement in the Hack Hurdles, 1J miles, but Golden Glade and Moulu may 'both prove dangerous. Kurapai has a great load in the Hack Steeples, but he, Coalition, and Bodenham will probaily monopolise the betting. The Dannevirke Hunt meeting on Thursday will see Mattock, Chaban, and other good hunters in action, and should be a most successful gathering. The hack events will be easier picked after sizing up the running of the Dannevirke Bating Club's meeting..

MARTON NOTES. (By "Moturoa.") Tons of money at Marton. Vladicau paid a great "divvy." "Case" whiskies wero 9d a time! The "cost of living" is still soaring. Sleepy Jack is not as somnolent as his name suggests. My Pal turned over at the first fenco in the Hurdles. Pawerewere is a bold fencer, but ho hasn't too much pace. Avon Park finished right up in fourth place in the Railway Handicap, so lookout'. Signorella was galloping over everything at the finish of the Trial Plate and is worth following: Tt is a rare thing for one of Messrs Riddiford's horses to go out a rank outsider, but this is what happened to Coalition, who won very easily. Salutary dashed off smartly in the ; final event, but at the distance lie was • going up and down in the same .place. Another horse that stopped badly when running well was Flying Camp in the Marton Handicap. Tho ground settled his chance. Secretary Way did his best under trying circumstances, but things could have l.ein improved in many respects on Wednesday. , The club is outgrowing its appointments. Lady Louisa, Royal Reign, and Golden March were each saddled up on two occasions at Marton, and the last-named scored at the second "crack." The congestion of motor-cars on the Marton racecourse was a sight for sore eyes. There was an unholy mix up, the greasy ground adding to tho trouble, and some car owners took an hour and a half to get their machines out of the morass after the last race. Union Jack went oil' as if the Hack Steeples was run over two furlongs instead of two miles, and ran himself oat very early in the piece. Frank Flynn had a very rough ride on Sandy Paul in the big steeples, and only kept his seat at times by great horsemanship. When Sandy isn't in a mood ho takes a lot of driving at his fences. Half a mile from home in the big steeples Collector looked like collecting first money, but, when it came to racing, Master Strowan and Kurapai made him look very cheap. Mr. 11. Coyle's handicapping was first . class, good finishes being the order of the day. ft is a thousand pities that sueli a capable weight-adjuster is likely to be lost to Noo Zee for a time, anil all good sportsmen will wish him a safe return. Tiie Fordell trio, M. McCartcn, C. Price and G. Young, had the finish of the Trial Plate between them, riding the placed division in that order past the post. The catering at Marton was many removes from what is usually expected on an up-to-date racecourse, and many shrewd sports took a run over to the dining rooms on the railway station, where an excellent four-course dinner was smartly served, and the price, two shillings, was very ''light." Calais was well backed by knowing ones on Wednesday, but after having every chance he turned up badly. Not much good, Calais! Rude, who won the Trial very easily, is a smart little imported fellow by Cyrus—Ceheky. He is as game as a pebble, and should pay his way. Lady Beaufort was backed for a ton of money in the Welter, but ran unsighted. To have a chance she would have had to hop off smarter than she did, but her backers may get their money back tho first time she starts on a dry (rack. Detroit was chopped out early in the Marton Handicap, but finished just behind the placed horses, after making up a lot of ground in the last half mile. Acre had a commanding lead entering tho straight in tho Electric Handicap, hut stopped to a walk over the last furlong. Another fine day performer. Sweet Tipperary was very dirty at the post in the Railway, and this must always go against lier chance in sprint events. Bivouac showed his usua' *>•"-. ' .r firfurlongs on Wednesday, hi * l "' " U1 u the same class as Elocution <-«•'» <"« a.iu Co. .
