Dnnedin reports the death of Dr. Frank Ogston, aged 71 years. He was Professor of Medical Jurisprudence in Otago University. A London cable states that Hedley Baxter, captain of the Warwickshires, formerly of Ashburton, New Zealand, has been killed in action.

Mr. H. L, Seldon, formerly of Messrs. Cock and Co., New Plymouth, has been appointed secretary to the Ashburton High School Board of Gov. ernors.

Captain W. J. Hardham, 7.C., who was invalided from Gallipoli, is at present acting as Commandant of Queen Mary's Convalescent Home, Hanmor.

The death is announced of'Mr, R. A. Kemj), who for many years hud fceen a resident of Hawera. A son, Mr; Herbert Kemp, is on the staff of the Post and Telegraphs Department at New Plymouth, and Mrs. Thorpe, of Sltham, is a daughter. . ,

At the annual meeting of the Lepperton Dairy Company last night a resolution of sympathy with the widow of thffl late Mr. C. M. Lepper, who was closely identified with the district for many years, and was a member of the directors ate, was passed.

Mr. Harper B. Lepper was last night re-elected chairman of the Lepperton Dairy Company, a position he has held for many years. Mr. Lepper can ejaiw to bo one of Taranaki'a oldest dairy factory directors, having 24 years' experi« nice on the Lepperton directorate.

Corporal Leslie Wilton Andrew, who has been awarded the Victoria Cross, is thp son of Mr. W. J. Andrew, he&dm&ster of the Wanganui East School, and was twenty-two years of age at the time of his enlistment in 1914. He was engaged in the office of Mr. C. E. The death is reported of Mr. John, Penny, of the Eltham road; aged 81 years. Ho leaves a widow and two sons and three daughters, and a number of grandchildren. The sons are Jfr John Penny, of Pukekohe Ea-.t, and Mr. Jas. Penny, of Mangatoki. The daughters are Mrs. G. Gibson, of Riverlea, Mrs. J. Stables, of Riverlea, and Mrs. M. Lawson, of the Waikato.

Mr. 1\ W. T.owe, who has been New Zealand manager of the A.M.P. Society since 1877.. has' retired from the service, and on Thursday was entertained by the stafl, and received presentations from the New Zealand board of directors and from the staff. Mr. Arthur Amies, who succeeds Mr. Lowe, was formerly chief accountant in the Dominion.

A Press Association lliessage records the sudden death on Saturday evening last of Mr. Henry Hyde Carr, one <jf Wairoa's oldest military settlers, aged 73. He served in many engagements. He married Miss Mary Carroll (now deceased), sister of Sir James Carroll, and leaves no issue, but an adopted son, Harold (son of Mr. Herbert Williams), nephew of Sir James Can-oil.

Major William T. Joll, Queen Alexandra's 2nd (Wellington-West Coast) Mounted Rifles, has been appointed an attesting officer under the Military Service Act. with the rank and pay o£ captain whilst so employed. Lieutenant (honorary captain) Thomas J. L. Buxton ceases to act as ship's quartermaster on H.M.N.Z. transports, and retains the honorary rank of captain until further notice.

The Minister of Defence informed Mr. W. T. Jennings, MJP., yesterday that a cable received reports that Lieutenant Alf. G. Jennings, M.C.. was admitted to the Eighth General Hospital, Rouen, on September 3, suffering from a severe gunshot wound received on August 28. The High Commissioner cabled that ha would visit Rouen yesterday to see Lieut, Jennings and report on his condition. The deaTh occurred at the Auckland Hospital on Monday of Mr. Joseph Swinburne Kelly, at the age of 60 years. Deceased was the fifth son of Captain Robert Kelly, of the 83r'd Regiment, and was born at Remuera. He joined tha Police Force, and was for some time stationed at Devonport. He was promoted to sergeant, and was stationed at Opunake, Taranaki. He retired a few years ago, and came to St. Helier'a Bay to reside. Deceased is survived by his widow.

A very >old colonist has just passed away in Hav.era in the person of Mr. Wilson Milne. Mr. Milne came to New Zealand in the very early times, and first Bottled in Kangitikei, then in Wavorley, and later on was,farming. fl» the Waimate Plains, being indeed one of the first settlers just on the other sida , of the Waingongoro on the Main South road. He was an extremely activeminded man, and besides being a good farmer, took great interest in publio affairs, though we are not aware that he ever sought any publio position. Ha was an intimate personal friend of tho late Mi*. John Bryce, who perhaps never had a more loyal political supporter. For a good many years Mr. Milne had been a resident of Hawera, and, ini spite of his advanced years, until comparatively lately was able to get about a good deal. At the time of his death ha had attained the patriarchal age of 93.. Mrs. Milne predeceased him many years*.—? Star.
