A Preso Bureau message from Vien. na says that the Austrian divisions on the Italian front have done the whole of their duty but were crushed by the enemy artillery. This is the most significant and serious admission the Aus> trians have yet made. VIOLENT FIGHTING RE-STARTED. AUSTRTANS' COUNTER-OFFENSIVE TO SAVE lIERMADA. Received Sept. C, 10.5 p.m. London, Sept. 0. On the Italian front on Wednesday fighting north-east of Gorizia re-started with violence, sufficiently proving that jthe had been lying low for the past few days. It has been found that definite deductions cannot be drawn from the comparative quiescence of the enemy's artillery. If less active than the Italian, it does not, necessarily signify a shortage of ammunition. Tuesday's heavy bombardment of the Italian communications in and around Gorizia show that the Austrians are alive to the importance of the present positions. The Austrians are continually bringing up reserve and enormous numbers of machine-guns, sacrificing regiment after regiment in the hope of .weakening the Italian attacks. Their old formidable trenches are now wiped out. Tlio,Homerio struggle developed into continuous hand-to-hand fighting. Meanwhile the Italians aro pitilessly shelling the Austrians' cavcj and dugouts. The latest prisoners state that thousands of wounded have been lying for three days, it being impossible to succor them. The Austrian offensive on the Carso no doubt aims at breaking the circle of steel which is gradually closing round Heruiada. EFFECT OF AIR RAIDS. AUSTRIAN FLEET SENT TO FIUME.
