WORKS COMMITTEE MEETING , 'A meeting nf tlio Work's Committer of the Now Plymouth Borough Council ! «"as held on Monday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. C. If. Burgeis). Crs. C W. Browne. W. C. Collins W. F. Short. F. J. Hill, J. W. Hayden, J. Clarke, and E. J. Deare. SOUTH ROAD CONTRACT. C. (',. Blanchard asked the council to proceed with the kerbing and channelling of Ihe north side of South road from Bolt road to Bayley road, let by the St. Aubyn Town Board to Messrs Russell and Sons. The work was held over till the tramway was finished on the suggestion of the late mayor, Mr. G. W. Browne. He hr 1 consented at the time to the iwork being held over but had expected it to be proceeded with when the levels were fixed. Some years had elapsed but the work had not been finished although it had been commenced by the contractor. It was decided to reply that by an agreement entered into between Russell and Son and the council in February. 1913, tile kerbing and channelling- of the South road from the north-western boundary jof section 3. Bonithon, to the intersection of Moturoa road and South road had lieen eliminated from, the contract, and that in all matters dealing wih the St. Aubyn loan the council had strictly adhered to the terms decided Tipon at the conference held on Februarv 10, 1013. at <wbicb Mr. Blanchard was present. WORKS AUTHORISED. • It was decided in connection with loan expenditure to affirm the principle of repairing the inner roads of the borough first. The amount to be expended from revenue on new street works not to exceed '£2 MO. The borough engineer was authorised to proceed with the following works. — To be charged to general account: Courtenav street from Liardet street to Currie street (£-253 10s), tarring on same 15ft wide. £O7: Queen street, from King street to St. Aubyn street ( £131). tarrin? same 12ft wide ( £"?4). To be charged to -C-(2.000 loan account: Mangorei road from Ttimu street to the borough boundary ( £2OOI. The engineer was further authorise'* to carry out the work in Gill street from - Cover street to ITobsori street in accordance with bis est invite (£4IRV the cost so far as the money is available to the .£22.000 loan and the remainder to the general account. In connection with other streets on the schedule of works the Mayor and Crs. Tlnyden and Hill were appointed a committee to inspect them and report. GENERAL. The executive committee of the Returned .Soldiers' Big Push asked permission to erect temporary stalls in the streets on Saturday, September 22, and also for permission to use Brougham street from Devon street to Powderham street on that day.—Granted, subject U> no under obstruction being offered to traffic and to the consent of adjoining owners in Brougham street. ; The manager of the Peoples' Picture [Theatre complained that the footpath in front of their building was in a state of disrepair and asked that something j should be done to improve it.—The engineer reported that sufficient repairs I had been authorised to make the footj'path safe and suggested that the eomI pany be approached with a view to asjcertaining whether they would bear a proportion of the cost of laying down a •permanent asphalt foothpath pathway -to Devon street at an estimated total cost of £2l.—Consideration deferred. Permission was granted to the Citii zenf' Baud to take up a collection at a j recital to be given by them in Pukekura i Park on Sunday next. [ The electrical engineer, Mr. R. H. Barti lev, wrote that at a recent inspection | at the breakwater with regard to tramI -way conveniences the chairman of the j electrica' and tramways committee had suggested to him that the borough eni ginccr should report on the proper pro- | eedure as matters discussed might in- | elude a public convenience.—Referred to the engineer. • Ci. Collis moved that the engineer be instructed io report on the damage done at the 3ast End by the heavy sea at high tide on Monday forenoon.—Secondthe MaviT and carried. Cr".
