A man named William Ellam was arrested in Wellington on Saturday mght on the arrival of the New Plymouth train, on a charge of assaulting a person named Mouat, Ellam and Mouat had a scuffle in the train, with the result that Mouat's leg was broken. The Mayor of Christehurch confessed on Friday night in an after-dinner speech that seven was a lucky number in his family. Both he and his wife were born on the seventh clay of a month, engaged on the seventh, and had seven of the finest children that one could wish. In addition, the citizens had honoured llim with seven years of office. In connection with the War Loan the following resolution was adopted at Monday's meeting of the Taranaki County Council on the motion of the chairman (Cr. J. Connett), seconded by Or. C. Andrews:—"That this.council suggest to its employees the desirability of taking up a portion of the war loan, and that the council is prepared to advance up to £IOOO to be taken up in war certificates by them by deduction of not less than 5 per cent, from tin™ l each mouth,'*

The captain states that when in Now Plymouth a few'days ago he saw a plant 12ft high, from ■which, that very morning, three birds (silver-eyes) had been taken. The seed pods are covered with a gum which holds the birds when they touch it. ■ The Empire Theatre management announce that the rights of th« high class motion picture productions, the "Metros," have been secured for this popular house, and in celebration of the event the great Olga Petrova will be featured this Friday and Saturday in her latest success, "The Waiting Soul." The churches in Masterton at one time found it necessary to adopt Billy .Sunday methods of advertising. ' A visiting clergyman announced that he would deliver a lecture upon the subject of "Fools." An innocent newspaper on the following evening announced: ''The Rev. So-and-So delivered a lecture in Masterton last evening upon the subject of 'Fools.' There were a large number present." At the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday judgment was given by Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., for the plaintiff in the undefended civil case, E. B. Cooke (Mr. A. 0. Lowrey) v. Barney Ngawhare (Puniho) for the amount claimed, £37 ISs 3d, with costs, £3 Ss. In a judgment summons case, Charles Lyttle (Mr. Frank E. Wilson) v. Mawhi Onekura, an order 'was made for payment of the amount due, £23 lis, on or before the 11th inst., in default 21 days' imprisonment. Mrs. Truby King (wife of Dr. Truby King), speaking at the deputation of the I'hmket Society ta the Hon. CI. W. Russell (Minister of Public Health), at Wellington on Monday, stated that while the scientific feeding of pigs and calves had been laid down years ago, they were only nonv going into tho question of the scientific feeding of babies, though it was just as easy to lay it down exactly for them as for pigs and calves. There was no room for doctors differing. Like all Scotch comedies, character parts abound in ''Kitty Mackay,'' and the cast selected by the Vitagraph is well adapted to its work. The high spirits, love of fun and ready wit of Kitty are brought out by Lillian Walker most entertainingly; she also makes a charming picture in her frocks of sixty years ago. This delightful motion pie•ture gem will be screened to-morrow night only at the Empire. It will be noticed, (savs the Inglewood Record) that one of the Raynpr family, is drawn in the 1 ballot. This family comes very near, if it does not reach, a record. Five sons are already at the front, two volunteered (including the one drawn in the present ballot) but were turned down by the Medical Board; And two have not yet reached the age for active service; strange to say, Sir. iTamblyn. of Tariki, who* is a brother to Mrs. Raynor, has sent six soni to tho front, three of whom have made the supreme sacrifice, and another has been wounded. Surely it is not often that a sister i:nd brother can show such a grand recc rd. The story of the Y.M.C.A. work at the front and in England will be told in New Plymouth to-day by Mr. A. Varney. New Zealand commissioner, late from the scene of hostilities on the West front. At the flood Templar Hall in the afternoon there will be a special meeting for the wives, mothers and sisters of the seldiers. and in the evening, at the Empire Theatre, Mr. Varney will deliver a lecture illustrated by over 200 views specially taken by himself. Ali arrangements for the WhiteYej sprin:. show are nearing completion. The entries received up to yesterday are distinctly encouraging. Messrs Cooper and Co., Ltd., Wellington, wired that their exhibit would be on the mail train on Wednesday. For the last two days the committee has been making arrangements to suitably stage the exhibits. Apart from the floral display, the gifta of produce, fruit and confectionery have been numerous. The stalls of plain and fancy goods will contain tempting bargains for the public. Afternoon tea arrangements are in the hands of a capable ladies' committee. The Mayoress (Mrs. 0. H. Burgess) has kindly consented to officially open the show at 2.30 p.nj. Extraordinary reductions in men's and boys' clothing are ottered at the Melbourne's great reduction sale.
