DISTRICT NEWS.
KORU. (From Our Own Correspondent). A farewell social was tendered Private Arthur Barnett who mas up on final leave on the 29th nit., when a very enjoyable time was spent. Musical items were rendered by Misses and Mr. Norris, of New Plymouth; violin, Mr. Howard Barnett; pianoforte duet. Miss Watson and Mr. Pearson; song. Cyril Hinkley; recitation, Mr. Englefield ; comic songs, Mr. Cheshire. Mr. and' Miss Norris' singing was much appreciated both in nolos and duets. Mr. Pearson played the dance music, Misses Norris, Watson and Mr. IT. -Barnett (violin) playing extras. During the evening Mr. Cheshire, as chairman, presented the guest of the evening with a uvristlet watch on behalf of the Koru settlers, and Miss' Watson fastened it on. WAITOITOI. (From A Correspondent). A very successful dVening was given by Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Phillips at their residence, Waitoitoi, last Friday, guests being present from all parts of the district. Spring flowers and pot plants decorated the rooms, and buttonholes made by Miss Phillips were quickly disposed of. The drawing room was arranged for cards, and was crowded all the evening, while the dining room was used for games and competitions, and in these the help of Mr. Penwarden, of Pukearuhe, was very much appreciated. Musical selections were given by Mrs. Cannon and Mr. J. Williamson's gramaphone, the selections being much enjoyed, as was a recitation byMr. H. Bunnv and a song by Mr. Spurr. A dainty supper was provided by the hostess, anil at the close of the evening, the grand sum of £2l was realised, this going to help Baby Willison" (North CountryBaby) to win the Baby Contest.
