STRATFORD.

It is reported that well over £OOOO has been put into the war loan by Stratford applicants. This was transacted through the post office, whilst it is understood that other amounts have gone through the banks. During August 14 births were recorded, 8 deaths and no marriages, in Stratford. In the court report of Friday's sittings a typographical mistake made li appear as F. Bell being defendant in a debt case. It should have appeared F. Belk, and the substitution of an 1 for a k made all the difference. The annual social held at Midhirst by the Methodist Ladies' Guild, proved most successful and enjoyable. The church was crowded, and the merits of the programme fully justified anticipations Those assisting were: Miss Butcher, "Mate of Mine" and "Mother McCree'"; Miss Huse, "Coming Home"; Miss M Hopkins (violin) "Serenade" and duet (violin and piano) by Misses Hopkins. Mrs. Vickers and Miss Huse were heard to great advantage in "Waves of the Ocean," whilst Mr. George Smith, also pleased with "Asleep in the Deep." The Stanley road scholars afforded agreeable variety in their dialogues. Miss Phyllis Symonds' piano solo and the duet by .Viesdames Lacey and Blanchard. "The v.ind and the Harp," deserved the hearty applause accorded. The value of the j guild is shown by the fact that the members hail raised £SO during the year, and had made good use of the money. Whilst writing about socials, mention must be made of the Stanley road enter tainment held last week. The evening wns one in aid of the piano fund, which now ceases to be a debt. Those assisting in the evening's entertainment were: Mesdames Edmonson and McCloud. Misses Phillips, Fieldes and Tapp, and Mr. Saune. For the dance that followed, i Miss Ruby Anderson supplied the music, which was voted Al. -There is no time like the present. It I is\youra. and the wise man is he who makes the the most of the opportunity. Just now the opportunity of making a little cash go a long way is presented at Mr. C. £. James' warehouse. Trices are down to bedrock, whilst quality is of the highest. Ladies, don't neglect this chance of securing best leather handbags, jewellery, wedding presents., etc., now offering. Call and inspect when next in town. Mr. B. J. 'Peters' jewellery sale will soon be at an end. Prices have been considerably reduced in the many lines he is earning. Whilst the kiddies are catered for the adult is not forgotten and the shelves are crowded with fancy goods so dear to the heart of the ladies. Ladies' leather goods, jewellery, etc., are in great variety, whilst "smokes" for father (and pipes, too) are in every brand.
