The Daily News. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1917. THE GREAT LOAN VICTORY.
There has for the past few days been the keenest anticipation as to what the result of the issue of the Liberty Loan would be, but the suspense has ended in a manner that will cause a feeling of pride throughout the Dominion, which will be echoed in the Motherland. The result is magnificent. Twelve millions was all that was asked at present, but the splendid spirit of the people rose to the occasion, and sixteen millions has been offered. For a small country like New Zealand, from a population point of view, to bring, in a few days, sixteen millions into the Treasury for war purposes is a truly great feat, all the more • '' ; ng in view of the fact that the contributed over thirty millions towards the prosecution of the great Imperial war cause. All this has been done, not because the wisdom and statesmanship of our Ministers have aroused the full confidence of the people, but rather by reason of the fact that the hearts of the people are so rightly attuned that in this supreme crisis of the country and the Empire their patriotism lws brushed astite the panicky proposals of the Government, and struck a note of generosity that is beyond all praise. But for this admirable spirit, the ill-advised compulsory contribution clause in the Finance Bill might have jeopardised the success of the loan; yet even that could not lessen the ardor wherewith all sections of the community are imbued over the determination to win the war. The people of New Zealand may justly feel gratified with the signal success of this big effort. It is a great victory—moral and financial —that should have its effect in showing that whether it is men, money, or the utmost sacrifices. the people of the Dominion arc one in their desire to carry the war aspeedily as possible to a successful issue.
