: THE MASTER PROBLEM. BRITAIN'S HEAVY LOSSES. United Service. ~ ""■'■" Received Aug. 31, 10 p.m. London, Aug. 31. The Daily Mail says the submarines arc still the master problem of the war. The losses are almost seventy big ships monthly. This fact reveals that we are barely holding our own at the severest cost. The Times' engineering supplement comments upon the losses of 825 vessels as a result of the half year's ruthlessnew. This represents tibout one-eighth of tlie British mercantile fleet. The average loss is 3776 tons each, excluding 149 fishing vessels. LIGHT FRENCH LOSSES. Paris, Aug. 30. The French Admiralty reports as follows on the losses from submarines during the past two weeks:— This Last week week Arrivals ... ........... Admiral Sims has reported to the Navy Department that the work of tic American destroyers in the U-boat zone had proved most satisfactory, the Üboats bring less effective than they were two months ego.
