SCHOOL COMMITTEES' ASSOCIATION.

ORDINARY MEETING. An ordinary meeting of the Taranaki School Committees Association was held in the Technical College last night, the following gentlemen being present:— Messrs S. G. Smith (chairman), G. H. Dolby, A. Lister, W. Hooker, W. R. Morris, J. Downes, H. J. Koller, King, L. Laurent, and W. G. Reid. The Education Department wrote in reply to resolutions forwarded by the association stating: (1) That a proposal would shortly he placed before Parliament in order to provide for an increase in the rate of capitation for Grade 0 schools. (2) That the Education Act gave the fullest powers to Education Boards to transfer teachers in their own district and to remove them if inefficient. (3) That nothing could he done in the matter of a uniform system *>i schoolbooks till after the war. (i) That a Uniform standard of examination in the two most important subjects, English and arithmetic, was already provided for by the Department, and that all care was taken to make the standard as uniform as possible with Tegard to the other subjects. (5) That the matter of paying capitation to committees should bo referred to the Board. (6) That the Department made annual payments for the replacement of worn-out buildings, and all such work should be carried out by the hoards. (7) That proposals would shortly be placed before Parliament to provide for an increased capitation allowance to school committees. (8) That the desirability of changing the date for closing school committees' accounts was under consideration. (9) That the request of the Stratford committee for the separation of the primary and secondary schools in that town had been taken into consideration, hut as yet it had not been possible to come to a final decision in the matter. —Received, and reply regarding payment of capitation to committees referred to Education Board. It was resolved to ask ..the executive of the Taranaki branch of the Educational Institute to meet the executive of the Association to discuss matters of mutual interest.
