To tlio Editor. Sir,—Your report of the proceed inns ftt- tlie annua] meeting of the Elthaio Co-operitive Dairy Factory Co. Ltd.. held last Saturday, contains the statement of Mr. C. Carlson that he had been informed that a returned soldier who had lost an. arm in action had applied to the local patriotic society for financial assistance to the extent of ,C 3 to enable him to get to Auckland, and had been refus?d, being disgusted at the number of questions asked: and that a private business man. on being informed of the matter, had come" forward and lent TTe -oldier the amount; 'but dul not contain any reference to the statement of Mr. James Campbell, a member of the patriotic committee, contradicting Mr. Carl-on's Matcment, and assuring the meeting that never yet bad a reasonable application been received for assistance and refused. You wiTC.no doubt think it Tight to give me this opportunity of correcting any false impressions in the minds of the public as to tlie disposal of the funds which they have contributed for patriotic purposes, and I supplement Mr. wimpbell's contradiction by stating that Mr. Carlson, in recpon«e to an invitation from the committee to supply details, has unreservedly withdrawn and expressed regret for the statement made by him at tlie meeting, which lu* says, was based on incorrect information received by iiira, tile facts being that the returned man in question was a stranger to tile district, and had made no application to the patriotic committee- or to any individual member oi it.—l am etc., TIIOS.
