A London cable slates that Mr. G. H. Roberts, who was recently appointed Minister of Labor in succession to Mr. J. Hodge, was re-elected unopposed. The names of the following Taranaki men appeared in Saturday's casualty list:—T. Harvie (A. E. Harvie, Manutahi, father), H. E. Coffin (Mm. S. Cofr fin, Opunake, mother).
Mr. R. P. Taylor, cornet soloist, in the Citizens' Band, left on Saturday en a visit to his father, who is seriously ill in Grafton, New South Wales. Mr. Taylor expects to be away for a month, or two.
Sergeant-Major Gerald Paul, after being severely wounded several times in Prance, was invalided back to Canada, where he rejoined Lord Strathcona's Horse as recruiting agent. Word has now been received that he has been appointed inspector of munitions at Winnipeg. The death is announced of Mr. Samuel Pearn, an old colonist of Taranaki, who settled with his people at New (Plymouth after their arrival with the ship William BryaDt. He saw action in the Maori war, and subsequently took part in the suppression of the rebellion that followDd the massacre of the Rev. John Whiteley at the White Cliffs. Of four sons, the youngest is the Rev. 0. S. Pearn, Methodist minister at Kaitarigata. .-.,
The first death of a returned soldier In New Plymouth occurred at the New Plymouth Hospital early on Saturday morning, when Private William John Bishop, only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bishop, of Koru, passed away. Private Bishop left with the 4th Reinforcements, tnd received shrapnel wounds in hands ind foot. He was invalided to England, and recovered sufficiently to join up with the New Zealand Division in France, being in the battle of the Somme. He returned home some months ago, having contracted, owing to the hardships of the campaign, a lung trouble which caused his death. The funeral' takes place to-day at the Te Henui cemetery.
The death occurred with startling suddenness on Saturday, about. 5 p.m., of Mr. Manson Theodore West, aged 64, a retired dairy factory manager, who reBided in Devon street east. Mr. West was visiting his married daughter, Mrs. P. L. Petrie, at Mr. fl. H. Saunders' residence in Filles street, and while walking with her in the garden fell to the ground from a paralytic seizure. He was at once taken indoors and medical aid summoned, but all Dr. Wade could do when lie arrived was to pronounce life extinct. The deceased had been attended by Dre. Walker and Blackley during the last nine months, and had suffered from two paralytic strokes.
Mr. John Terry, clerk of the Magistrate's Court, and Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, lias been transferred and promoted to the position of clerk of the court at Auckland, a position rendered vacant by the retirement on superannuation of Mr. Ralfe, and will leave here in two o> three weeks to enter upon the duties of bis new position. During the nine years Mr. Terry has been stationed in NewPlymouth he has won the esteem of all ivho have come in contact with him In his official capacity or privately, and his; many friends, while regretting his deoar,' ture, will be pleased that the services of so able, zealous and courteous a public officer have met with due recognitioa He will be succeeded by Mr. F.
