Good stakes are offered, and the twin gatherings are likely to attract a good number of Taranaki horses, particularly as spring racing is very limited this season. The Dannevirke Racing Club's programme comprises three open events, hack hurdles and hack steeples, and three hack fiat rates. The Hunt Club's menu contains four hunters' events, a hack steeplechase, and three hack races. Entries for both meetings close to-night at !) o'clock. with Mr. .Robert Takle, P.O. Box 55, Dannevirke. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Marton Jockey Club's spring meeting, which takes, place on Wednesday week. September (i, is now the chief centre of interest. Entries were exceptional, quantity and quality bein" strongly represented. Taranaki horses are there in force, and little fault can !)(; found with the weights apportioned to flying Camp, .Sandy Paul, Xita, and Calais. Maniaroa, Pergola, and Olenroy iippear to have their full share of weight. Possibly Sleight-of-Hand, Kauri King. Centre, and Interlude may be early favorites in ''doubles." Yesterday's mail from the front brought along a host of cheery letters from good "sports" who are arguing the point with Fritz. Sapper Bob McManus, who was well known in the local railway staff, reports that he is still going strong. Private fteorge ("Sandy") Chapman. well known in Inglewood, states that his arm (hurt in an accident at Inglewood) has gone "crook" on him, and he is afraid it will put him out of action. Private. George Waterton, a brother-in-law of "Moturoa's." writes expressing the opinion that "Ormond's elect will win the Great Northern Hurdles," which prediction turned out correct. Unfortunately, George Waterton was numbered amongst the killed this week. Hats oil' to a real good "sport" who paid the supreme sacrilice in his country's cause. Private Eric Julian (Inglewood) also sends kind regards to all "sports."
