A Sydney message reports tlm deatß of Mr. IS. Milne, .Deputy-Chief Railway .^Commissioner. Mr. J. C. 'Watkins, who was until recently hi the local office of the Union Steamship company, has now joined the i-Pateena as assistant purser.

Among the names of those reported as wounded and admitted to hospital on August 2, is that of Private C. Vauglian, son of Mr. H. E. Vuughan, of Waitara. Mr. ShrimptoH, of Whakaraara, has received word that his son Stanley has been killed in action. A short time ago another son was killed hi France. Private advice has been received that Captain Tahu Rhodes, who rejoined the Grenadier Guards after Gallipoli, and has been training men at Chelsea, has now been passed as fit for active service, and has gone to France.

Mr William O'Brien, a well-known settler at Spring Creek, Blenheim, died snddenly last week aged 6U.—There died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Kearney, Petone, Mr Charles Samuel Anderson, an old and respected resident of Dunedin, at the age of 82 years. The death is announced at the age of 75 of Mr William Cleland, one of the best-known residents of the Hutt Valley. The late Mr Cleland was a eon of Captain Cleland, one of tie early settlers in AVellington, and had lived at the Taita for the greater part of his Kfe, At the Presbyterian Church, Opunake, Jon Tuesday last, Mr. Robert Duke Ivirkpatrick, eldest son of Mr, R. Kirkpatrick, of Dunedin, was married to Miss Isabell Allsworth Stitt, second daughter of Mr. R. Stitt, of Opunake. The Rev. T. Tait, of Manaia, officiated, the church being prettily decorated for the occasion.

A public welcome was given Lieut. W. Ricketts, D.C.M., at Manaia on Wednesday evening. The local patriotic society presented him with a gold hunting lever watch. Lieut. Ricketts left with the Main Body jas a sergeant, was promoted at Gallipoli to sergeant-major, was mentioned in dispatches, and awarded the D.v.M. for conspicuous gallantry in the field. He returned from France recently for his commission.

Lieutenant H. iD. Williams,'of the Royal Flying Corp s , son of W. Williams, Meremcre, has been awarded the Military Cross and received fight command. Lieut. Williams fought through the Gallipoli campaign with the Auckland Mounted Rifles, where he was badly wounded by a bomb, which disabled him for mounted work. Thereupon ho join-, cd the Flying Corps, being posted to the Salonika front as an observer, where ho did good work and afterwards returned to France and Belgium as a pilot, where lie has lately gained distinction.—Star.
