HAWERA.
(From our Own Correspondent.) King Edward Park has a delightful appearance just now. To-day, when the sun shone from an almost cloudless sky, the beauty of the spot was enhanced to £ high degree. The bright-oolored daffodils and sweet-scented narcissi and a number of flowering shrubs are in full bloom, while the open spaces are clothed with grass of luxuriant growth. The mayor ajid Or. Hay ton visited, the park on "Wednesday morning and decided upon the site of three arbors which the Borough Council resolved should be erected. A spot within easy distance of the band rotunda was chosen. Live pungas will take the place of posts, and beautiful evergreens will fill the spaces between them.
During their visit to Hawera this week, the travelling Medical BiSard examined 29 reservists, _l3 of whom were volunteers. Of those examined 1G were classed as fit, and 13 were relegated to the home service section.
The borough roller is at present engaged in laying a stone foundation to Camberwell Road, preparatory to topdressing with tar miicadajn. Half the length of the thoroughfare has been laid down and consolidated.
The outstanding social event of the season waa-'the military bail, which was .'hold in the winter show hall on Widnes-! iday evening. The function, the proceeds-! of which are being devoted to the Ha* wer& Soldiers' Club, was a pronounced success. The e*ening was fine and over 120 coupjes were present. The Citizens' Band assembled in front of the hall prior to the commencement of danomg, and rendered a programme. A feature of the function was the grand march, which was performed to the accompaniment of band music, and was led by Major Suth■erl'ind, of Mauaia. The beautiiM uresi ses of the ladies, the prominent display 1 of khaki, the silver badges of the many 1 returned soldiers present ware conspicuous features. Over £3O was taken ;at the the door, and this sura, added to that derived from the sale of tickets, i should make a substantial amount for
-the purpose for which the ba& was armuged.
