RETURN OP WAR VETERANS. The Auckland Star says: There will be joy in many homes in the announcement that some of our veterans are to bo given a holiday in their own country. Never did soldiers deserve leave more. But we must all bear in mind that tlie reduction in the reinforcement rate, tlie (late of the operation of which is not stated, leaves us with tlie responsibility of finding 1020 men a month to support these men who have borne tlie heat and burden of the day for so long—no light task for a country like this at this stage of the war. And as Sir James Allen's protest against the demand of the War Oilice regarding the request for an extra brigade has been justified by subsequent events, we hope that the Government will continue to exercise watchfulness in this matter. It must be borne in mind that nun drawn from a country so far from the tield of operations, and so sparsely populated, imposes a burden out of proportin to that entailed by recruiting in European countries, or even Canada, which replaces its population rapidly by immigration.
