HAWERA.
From Our Own Correspondent. Hawera, Aug. 17. A sitting of the Native Land Court "'as opened at tile Foresters' Hall today. Judge Brown, president of the Aotea Land Board, presided, and among the counsel engaged were Mr. Jack, formerly president of the Aotea Land Board; Mr. W. J. Troad'well, of Wanganui: Mr. P. O'Dea, and Mr. P. C. Spratt,. of Hawera. The Board will be occupied for several days in hearing alienation cases. The proceedings of the Native Land Court were interrupted for a few minutes by an unexpected happening. Mr. P. O'Dea was cross-examining Mr. Brun--ton, of Ohangai, arid the latter fell in a swoon to the floor. The witness soon recovered. Mr. O'Dea hesitated aboat proceeding with the cross-examination, but did so upon being assured by Mr. Brunton that he 'would be all right. The witness explained that his sudden indisposition was duo to smoking too many cigarettes, a form of smoking to which he had not been accustomed. The Hawera -Male Choir gave a successful c once rt in St. Mary's Hal', last night and the audience warmly appreciated the items rendered. The No. 1 Wellington Milirttry Service Board will resume its HaAvera* sittings on Monday and Tuesday. Among the. cases set down is one in which the vatuo of the local efficiency board will be determined. Consielerable interest attaches to this case, which is regarded as a test.
