rules were submitted establishing an accident fund for jockeys and others on similar lines to those adopted in Xew Zealand. TURF TOPICS. (By ''Moturoa.") Concluding day at Riccarton. Marton weights are due on Wednesday. King Star paid a "stunner" price in the Winter Cup. Even bigger than Parky. Master has won three good stakes in the la-t few weeks. Sk-ight-of-lland's excellent hvck form was well borne out in the G.X. Hurdles, which he won handsomely. Gluepot received a frightful gruelling on the trip down to Cliristchurch, being ever a week on the boat, and being carried on to Port Chalmers. King Star, -winner of the Winter Cup, is an aged gelding by Martiau-Rosiphele, and until Thursday had done nothing startling on the race track. In eighteen starts iast season he only won twice, hut ran four seconds. His victories were in the Sumner Handicap at last year's Grand Xatior.al meeting, and in the Cim- | crack Handicap at the Ci.C. autumn meeting. The honors of the race were all with Parisian Diamond, who had bad luck to suffer defeat by a horse to which he was conceding 201b. The third horse, Brambletye, has been showing good form on the tracks, and will probably get amongst the winners before very long. As expected. Euripos (Hymettus— Martyrhmi) improved upon his third at Trent.ham by running oil' with the Avonliead Handicap. He is spoken of a3 a horse that is likely to do .big things on the Turf. Leonta's downfall was a "body blow" to Wangauui punters, who stood' expectant round the telegraph office on Thursday afternoon. When the blow fell, the crowd reeled .backwards and stacered across to the nub for revivers. The annual football match between North' and South Island jocksters eventuated at Cliristchurch last week, and was the usual wild and woolly all'air. When the numbers were hoisted it was found that the Southerners had registered 12 points to their opponents' {>. "Rangi" Thompson and L. Morris scored for the North, Morris also kicking a penalty. The "star" of the -winner's' team was Stan. Reid, who booted the leather between the posts four times and won the match for his side. Next time tliey meet, Reid, like Cray the biiliardist. will be confined to so many consecutive hazards, as it were. C.J.C. SECOND DAY. Excellent acceptances have been received for the concluding day of the Grand National meeting, and the raciuq promises to be very interesting. Proceedings open with the Aylesbury Steeples, in which Stono (linger with 12.2. on Thursday's time test," appears nicely treated. Ascalaphus Just failed to see out the mile on the first day and should he better suited to the shorter distance (the P.edelilT Handicap), in which he carries 10 stone. i St. Elmn showed a lot of pace in the ■ Orand National iStecplceihase, and is •likely to start a hot favorite in the i Beaufort Steeplechase, run over a mile ' less. ! The August Handicap looks verv open. | Mks De Val and Tin Cp will probal.lv !be bast backed. The first day's dividend payers shc\ld not want for backers in the Sprcydon Hurdles, and in tho concluding eveitta local punters will yo&.iM- sup/ort
