MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

BY-MW OASES. A number of borough and county by-* law easea were beard by Mr. A. Crooke,S.M., at the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr. J. H. Quilliam appearing for the Taranaki County Council and Chief-Inspector Day for the Now Plymouth Borough Council. Robert Frederick Roebuck and LeonaTd Taylor were each convicted of a breach of the heavy traffic by-laws on a county road. Tho former was fined 10a with costs 17a (id, but a penalty 'of £2 with costs 17s Gd was imposed on the latter because of the different circumstances. Roebuck had admitted the offence and at once taken out a license; Taylor, Mr. Quilliam stated, had been caught before, had pleaded that he had no money for a license, and had been loaned £1 by the inspector to take one out, but had not done so. Robert Zimmerman was fined sis, with costs £ 1 Bs, for allowing a cow to wander on a county road; and James Benthara was convicted of driving a gig without proper lights and ordered to pay 7s costs. Tn the borough' cases, Frank Taunton was fined £l, with costs 7s, for having driven a motor bicycle at an excessive speed, Chief-Inspector Bay stating that he was going at the rate of 41 miles an hour; and Charles Banks was convicted' of carrying a passenger on a motor cycle otherwise than in a side! car, and' ordered to pay 7s and costs. William Henry Broome, for allowing a cow to wander on a borough street, was fined 10s and costs, the inspector stating that the cow had been previously three times in the pound. OVERCROWDING AT EVERYBODY'S THEATRE. Garnet H, Saunders, manager of 1 Everybody's Theatre, admitted a charge of overcrowding that place of entertainment by allowing patrons to sit in tho passages, and was fined £l, with costs 10s. | OTHER CASES. William Hargreaves, who did not appear, was convicted of carrying in a cart intended for moat, goods otherwise than meat, namely furniture. ChiefTnspnctor Day said these were carts specially licensed for meat carrying, and it was an offence to carry anything else in them, as serious infection of the meat afterwards carted might ensue. His Worship said he would impose a fine of Z-, with costs 7s, but the lightness of the penalty must not be taken as a precedent.
