PREFERENTIAL SURTAX.
THE GOODS SPECIFIED. (Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, August 14. Resolutions wore agreed to by the Jfouse of Representative this afternoon authorising the following preferentialsurtax on the undermentioned goods not being the produce of manufacture of the British Dominions: — All articles n.o.e. made of textile, felt or other piecegoods, or of any combina- ■ tion of the same wholly or partly-made up or manufactured and not being apparell or clothing either wholly or partly made of drapery, n.o.e. flags, haberdash- • cry, n.o.e. lace and laces, n.o.e. ribbons and crape, all kinds of rugs, woollen, cotton, opossum or other textile :piece goods, n.0.0. including silks, satins, velvets, plushes, n.o.e. composed of pure* silk or of silk mixed with any other material in the piece and including also' imitation silks composed of'auy material* or substance whatsoever, umbrellas, parasols and sunshades, yarns, n.o.e . per cent, ad valorem. Apparel and ready made clothing;i 0.e., feathers, ornamental, including ostrich, artificial flowers, leaves and sprays, furs and fur trimmings, hats of all kinds, including straw hats, 'also caps, hosiery, n.0.e., millinery of all kinds, including trimmed hats, caps and bonnets.—2VW per cent, ad valorem.. Apparel made to the order for measurement of residents in New Zealand intended for the individual use of such residents, whether imported by the resi-. dents themselves or otherwise; apparel, viz., volunteer clothing made to measurement, sent from New Zealand, 20 per cent ad valorem. It, was also resolved that the rate of duty on cigars, snuff and cigarettes manufactured • in New Zealand as imposed by a resolution from the • Committee of Ways and Means, dated August, 1017, be revoked as from that date t and that duty bo payable on cigars, K .aai cijiarrt.fce^.-manufactured and
entered for home consumption after August, 1917, as follows:—(a) on cigars and-snuff 4s per lb, (b) on cigarettes if manufactured by machinery 3s Od per lb, on cigarettes if made by hand 2s lb, provided that if the manufacture of cigars and snuif containing less than 15< per cent, of tobacco grown in New Zealand becomes in the opinion of the Minister at any time hereafter detrimental toi the revenue, the Governor- Ueneral may by order-iii-council fix the maximum quantity of such cigars and snuff that may be made annually by any manufacturer at the aforesaid rate of 4s-Ib, and; may prescribe a rate of duty not exceeding Gs 6dMb upon all cigars and snuff' made in excess of such maximum quail-, tfity. , ,v S-.-13
