Word has been received by cable that; 'Private R. Monteath, who was reported, slightly woitnded, has rejoined his unit. Mrs. E, J. Way, of New Plymouth, yesterday received official intimation that her son, Private E. J. Way, of the 23rd Reinforcements, had been killed in action on July 31. Word Jura been received that Lieuten- ' ant H. C. Bavies, of the Royal Engineers and formerly of New Plymouth, has been promoted to second lieutenant in the sth (Wellington) Regiment. Advice wa« received yesterday that Sergeant Jas. Smith, who at one time was lessee of the Imperial Hotel, New Plymouth, was Silled in action on July 31. Mr. Smith also saw service in the Bier War.

Mi. B. HeUtffi was appointed taisporary secretary and treasurer to the Tarauaki Hospital aijd Charitable Aid Board at yesterday's meeting of that body. J*lr. Holden, who at present farming on Frankloy road, was for a time bookkeeper and assistant town clerk for the New (Plymouth Borough Council, j Mr William H, Beetham, J.P,, of Masterton, celebrated hj3 eightieth birthday recently. Mr Beetham was born in Yorkshire on August 10th, 1837, He is a of the late Mr William Beetham, of the Hutt, and was educated at Beverley, in his native County. He came to Xew Zealand in the ship William and Jane, ftrrivibg at Wellington in 1855.

Much regret was felt in the T# Koti district when the r.ews of the death in France of Private J. E. Clegg came through. Ho upent part of his boyhood in Te lloti, and was educated at the local school. Deep sympathy i« felt for Mrs Ciugg in her sorrow for the brave young son who has given his life for his eeuntry. Two other sons are serving tho Empire—ono is at preseal in camp and smother is in France,— Star.

It is with much regret that the many friends of Mr. Thos. Partington will learn of his sudden death yesterday. Mr. Partington was for soma years a carrier, but about 13 years ago joissti the borongk .working staff, umokmg chief drain layer. He was highly teined by who knew him, and beaida* being a valued member of the Now iPlymouth Fire Brigade, was an active ineui ber of the foresters' Lodge. About a fortnight ago ho fell a victim to lung trouble, but his end came suddenly yesterday whilst ho was partaking of hi* mid-day meal. Much sympathy will be felt for his widow and family circle. .
