MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
UNDEFENDED CASES. At the sitting of the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., presiding, judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the following undefended civil actions: —William Baker (Inglewood) v. George Lewis (Rahotu), £!) % and costs £1 lis liil ; Richard Frost (Omata) v. William Wnolven (Wanganui). £2B and eosts £2 Its; McEwcn Bros. (New Plymouth) v. Gertie Ross (New Plymouth), £2 and costs ss. BREACH OF GROCERS' AWARD. Charles Bond, grocer, New Plymouth, was proceeded against hy Mr. W. J. Wakelin (Inspector of Awards) for a breach of the Taranaki District Grocers' Award, in engaging a. lad named Harris, 1!) years of age, and paying him 25s per week, while the award rate 'was £2 per week. The lad was employed for nine weeks.
Bond, who admitted the offence and had not filed a defence, explained that when lie engaged the lad he told him to get a permit to work for 255, hut the boy did not do so, and he also neglected to see to the matter. He intimated his willingness to iiL.ke up his employee's past wages to the award rate. The inspector suggested that his Worship make an order for this to be done, but the Magistrate asked whether he had power under the Act to do this. Mr. Wakelin replied that he thought there was a case bearing on the point, but he could not find it just then. The ease was then adjourned by the court until August 2S. the defendant having the opportunity in the meanwhile of adjusting the amount of the wages.
