Forty cases oi smallpox have been reported as a result of the outbreak in western towns of the State (says the Sydney Sunday Times). All are of a mild type. The non-virulence of the disease is characteristic of what has been the experience since the first case was reported in 2sew South Wales during the recent epidemic. There have been .'IOOO cases, and not a single death has resulted. The outbreak of smallpox in such a mild form is regarded by many medical men as a blessing in disguise. It has caused those fearful of contracting it to be vaccinated, while those, who caught it have not suffered severely and have been rendered immune against virulent smallpox should it become prevalent. Generally speakin;;. the victims of the disease in New •South Wales have not been badly raark"d about the face with pock marks.
Some people are rather confused as to how to compute the new income tax, aa applied to given incomes. Here is a ready reckoner, which may help. The tax is Is 3d per £ on tlie first £40(1. Then add at the rate of P/td for each £IOO, and at the rate of one-eightieth of a penny for every odd £. Take as an example an income of £SBO. The t:ix in this ease is Is 3d (£400), plus U-jd ( £100), plus Id ( £80), a total tax of Is 51/1. Deduct the exemption of £3OO from tlie income, and the taxpayer's bill is Is i>'/ 4 011 £2BO, viz., £2O 2s Gd. The tax* on any income may be computed in this fashion. TV.kc the fortunate man with, say, £2S4O. His sum is Is .'id (£-100), 2s (id (£2400), and y s & ( £4O), a total of 3s D'/.d, and as he is not. allowed the exemption his tax bill is £538 8s -Id. A man with an income a little over £llOO has to give a tenth to She State, with £2400 he gives a sixth, with £4OOO a fourth, arid with £SOOO a third. It is a pretty heavy tax. but war is a costly business. —Auckland Herald. An interesting point regarding the re-cently-imposed duty on silk piece goods was raised in the House of Representatives on Thursday by Mr. W. T Jennings. He asked the Minister of Finance whether the increase in tho duty on silk would be imposed on silk manufactured goods as well as 011 piece goods, and he pointed out that if a duty were imposed 011 silk piece goods, and no additional duty were imposed on made up silken garments, the result would he that these garments would be imported more freely, and that local manufacture of them would be prejudiced. Sir Joseph Ward said that he had asked the head 01 the Customs Department for a report on this and other matters. He expected to have the report 011 the following day. and he 'would then inform the House of what was to be done. If it should be decided to impose additional duty 011 silk garments, the duty would date from August 7—this to prevent importers from taking advantago of the position Ijy eiearing goods in quantity.—'.Dominion.
