ALLEGED THEFT OF GOVERNMENT MONEY.'\ By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, tast Night, At the Supreme Court, an ex-civi} servant, Herbert Eaton RadcliSe, was oharged with having on September B r . 1016, stolen £l5O, and on a later date £36 lslOd, the property of the Ifow Zealand Government. Opening the case for the defence, Mr. Wilford pointed out that aceuaei' tyas in a good financial position, and he claimed that when Raduliffe did the acts i«r, which, he was tried he had no criminal intention, and owing to disease he was not capable of forming a criminal &-. tention.
Mr. Justice Hosking, in summing up, said it had'been suggested that disease had- a considerable bearing upon tie question of intent, but the medical evidence seemed to fall very far short of what the court was led to expect from the opening address of counsel. The defence, in fact, was that accused was not in want of money, and that made it more' difficult to account for the aet.
