There was a good attendance 'if the public at the meeting held outside the post ofike en Saturday evening. The Mayor, in a short address suitable to the occasion, expressed regret at the heavy losses sustained by New Zealanders, and extended his sympathy to».the parents of Lieut. Ralph Doughty, who. it was cabled that day. had died ol wounds. The singing of the National Anthem, the sounding of the Last Post by Conductor G. Ford, of the Town Band, and cheers for the boys at the front, concluded the proceedings. In the absence of Mr. AV. Hathaway, the seconder of the motion by the Mayor was Mr. George Sangster. The Town Band and cadets were in attendance. MODEL DAIRY FARM. The committee met on Saturday. Present: Messrs J. W. Deem (chairman). F. Ranford, S. Pitt. \V. H. Were, J. \\ Boon, and J. B. Richards (lion. see.). An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr. R. Dingle. A sh.p. electric motor has been purchased and a quantity of tools. The farm committee was instructed to purchase a manure distributor, and to proceed with top-dressing with basic Blag, basic sup. and Ephos. " The road frontage fence is to he removed and concrete posts erected for gates and cow yards. The committee are to proceed with the purchase of farm implements and harness. Factory shares are to be purchased by Mr. Richards. The attention of the County Council is to be drawn to the encroachment of the road formation on the property. A ram for supplying water to the cowshed is to be secured at a cost not excelling £25. Telephone connection is to he made to the farm house, and a recommendation made to the Department of Agriculture urging that the ehairnian'6 private house be also connected. Mr. Pitt suggested that an area of land be offered to the boy scouts for the purpose of growing vegetables for the }>enelit of soldiers and their dependents, .pnd a committee was appointed to cont'ei' with the llov Scouts committee.
Accounts totalling £74 7a Gd were passed for payment.
GENERAL.
The La-dies' Patriotic Committee had another successful dav on Saturday, the total takings being £lB Us (tea-rooms £7 and Mart £ll Us). The cake-guess-ing competition was divided between Jliss Pick and Mrs. Keighloy (Mahoc). ■Tlio actual weight was Slb'iloz, and the winning guesses wire 107. over and under. Xext Saturday is Midhirst's day, and the ladies of the north are making every effort to push matters ahead to ensure a big day. Donations received have proved numerous and desirable, so patrons may rely on having an array oi goods available for purchasers that will be able to supplement the kitchen larder at very little cost.
Tho new picture thentre is making progress. The contractor is experiencing some trouble in getting carpent crs, but this difficulty is not confined solely to Stratford, as whilst at H.iwcra on Saturday the writer was informed that workmen of any description were hard J(0 get, and some of those available were not very satisfactory. The A. and P. Assiciation's concert commiltkc are building big hopes of a most successful entertainment at the [showgrounds tea-rooms on Tuesday evening. A danct follows the concert.
The long winter evenings are still on hand. To those who find time heavy a visit to Mr. C. E. James' warehouse will soon provide a remedy, as lie has in stock all classes of parlor games for young and old.
