FELT ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

The severest shock rf carthqunke felt in Wellington fov some years occurred at 3.22 this niorning. There were, slight shocks also at about 4 aud 5 o'clock. No damage is reported. Both clocks at the General Post Office stoppel Paiiiatiin, August 6.
There was an earthquake of exceptional severitv at 3.20 a.m. Tlv: shc-t-l: was prolonged, and buildings rocked violently. There were several smaller shakes at intervals up to "> o'clock. 'lhe direction appeared to be from north (o south. Chimneys were razed to 4 ho ground, windows and gla>s doors broken, brick walls suffered, lavatory cisterns were emptied, and in private houses and business places smashed. Christchureh, August 0.
The earthquake was not felt by residents, but wan registered on the instrument at the Observatory. The very large motion lasted three minutes. The total duration of the tremors was one hour, beginning at 3.21,
