WAR PENSIONS.
The State liability with regard to war pensions has now reached £330,000. During the past month 753 new claims—>.'o3 from soldier.? and 248 from dependents—and 303 claims for renewal were dealt with !.\ l!..- " ' !: n ; U -d. Of the dependents, 131 were granted permanent and ()(> temporary pensions, Jlighteen of their claims were refused and eight adjourned. Besides these, thero were six claims from dependents of sol-' diers discharged from camp. The annual value of the -014 pensions granted during July was £42,0 M. The total number of pensions granted from April 1 to July 31, 1917. was 2334; and the total annual value. £150,348. From these, honvever, must be deducted some 500 expired pensions, valued approximately at £33,000 a year, thus making, in round figures, the net (State charge for the current financial year £123,000; the total net :State liability, adding £257,000, the annual value of the pensions granted up to Maych 31 last, is now £380,000. The camp cases so far dealt with are, in all, 81 soldiers' claims and nine dependents claims. Fifty-six soldiers were granted temporary pensions, 20 applications were declined, and two adjourned. Of the dependents, six were granted pensions and the remaining applications declined. 'The annual value of the camp pensions is £3529.
