THE HOSPITAL SECRETRAYSHIP.
To the Editor. Sir, —Tlio Hospital Board are adverting in the lotal and outside newspapers for a temporary secretary and treasurer at the not extravagant wage of i) 4 per -week. One wonders why this appointment should lie a temporary one. It is !<arei.v twelve months since the Board engaged the present secretary, a stranger, in preference to pome very suitable local apiplicanU, and they did so knowing, full well that he was of military ago and liable to be called up at any time. They are surely under no obligation to this young man to keep the billet open for hiiu. lie was selected because he had been in similar employment in Dunedin, and might therefore be expected to know more about •the work than a Taranaki tyro, and the quettion may well be asked now whether he has proved himself so efficient that the members of the Board are convinced that an equally good man can •not be found among the many who are or have been to the front and returned after doing their bit. Is this Ivriiy the next man is to be only a loeum .tcncnaT IDo tho Board members expect that any competent man is going to take 'op a temporary engagement at less than ooal-beavera' wages and then, when he hi.? pit nicely into the run of the work, get 'hi3 walking ticket in order to make •way for a gentleman whose only claim appear* to pe one year's service? Perish the thought! —1 am, eU., not an -Applicant.
