RETURNED SOLDIERS.

AN APPEAL BY THE MAYOE At the conference of the New Plymouth Returned Soldiers' Association this week, it was decided to hold a day for themselves. In order that the public may understand the grounds on which this appeal is being made, they have asked me to explain through the press, and 1 do not think I can do better than quote two or the rules governing the Association:—(l) To promote the general welfare of returned soldiers as euch and as citizens of New Zealand; (2) to support and protect the character status and interests of returned soldiers and| to promote the consideration and discussion of all questions affecting returned soldiers and to promote good fellowship amongst them in the following Way:— (1) To obtain employment per medium of a Returned Soldiers' Labor Bureau for all members requiring employment in the local districts after duly considering the ability, character and health of the men applying. (2) To give immediate financial relief in cases that do not come under the jurisdiction of the patriotic committee or War Relief Associations, (") To give advice and assist in cases where difficulty is experienced in the matter of pay and pensions. ! As all these matters cannot be attend-. ' cd to without financial assistance, and as the subscription to the Association is but a nominal one, covering the cost of the member's badge, the Association is ; appealing to the public, for funds to j carry on in the manner indicated. This | is the first direct appeal to the public by tile returned men themselves, and I j ask that generous assistance be given to them in this worthy effort, i The returned soldiers' problem is go- ! ing to be a much more difficult one than Is generally realised, and personally I am glad to see the Association is alive to this fact and taking early steps to help in solving same. Mr. 'Newton King has consented to act with me as a trustee for the funds. I am, etc., j CHAS. H. BURGESS. Mavor.

P.S. —It has been decided to hold a big day on Saturday, September 22, and q, concert on Friday, the 21st.
