90 PER CENT. OF APPEALS. A RUSH TO MARRY. New York, Aug. 1. The New York Herald says that up to the present 90 per cent, of the men called, to serve have applied for exemption. There were more than a hundred wed- | dings to-day in the chapel in the Municipal Buildipgs, whereupon the Federal Marshal forbade the issue of licenses. The New York Times' Washington correspondent savs that women who marry the object of assisting evasion of service are liable to prosecution. WAR TAXATION. Washington, Aug. J. The War Tax Bill lias been increased from 1070 to 200Q million dollars. Tho | new taxes will bring in 904 millions, 1 including 27 millions on incomes exceeding 15,000 dQllars. Oft TANK EXPLOSION. New York, Aug. 1. An oil tank on board a submarine chaser blew up at Bayonne, New Jersey. There was a terrific explosion and the crew were hurled into the water. Pour were severely injured. The cause is pot explained.
