ALIENS' RIGHTS AND RESTRICTIONS.
AS REGARDS LAND AND BUSINESS NAMES, (Our Parliamentary Reporter). "Wellington, Julv 31. Replying to Mr. G. V. Pearee (Patea) this afternoon, Mr. Massey said Ms attention had been drawn to reports that aliens were getting possession of land in New Zealand. Ii a man was a naturalised British subject the New Zealand Government had no power' to prevent him from getting land. He did not think an unnaturalised alien should hold land now, and the rule of the Lands Department was never to allow aliens to get possession of Crown lands. Mr. Massev added that- he would have pleasare in referring the matter to the Crown law olliecrs.
Tlie Registration of Business Names Bill, which was read a second time today, is a drastic measure intended to prevent aliens disguising themselves under British sounding names for business 'purposes. All persons and linns trading under names other than the true names of the individuals and partners concerned are to bo registered, and the registration certificates, which will disclose the details as to name and nationality, arc to be placed in a conspicuous position in the business premises where customers may learn the truth for themselves, The penalty for a breach is a fine not exceeding five pounds per day for each individual concerned. The bill also provides that, in cases of registered firm'', the true name and nationality of origin shall appear on all trade catalogues. trade circulars, show cards and business letters.
