DISTRICT NEWS.
OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Tho physical instructors under the Education Hoard paid a visit to Optinakc school* last week. The lady instructress visited the Convent school and gave lessons to the scholars Mr. Sergei, the agricultural instructor, also paid a visit to this district a«d gave the school boys practical lessons in tree priming and best uses of various manure* for garden purposes. Football is being taken on enthusiastically here. The Senior Cadets have a very capable team, all keen lads. With a little tuition and practice they would hold their own with the test combinations in the competitions.
Formers in this district admit the dairying season is early here. Cows are coming in numerously and the feed is coming along well, due principally to the absence of cold winds.
A noticeable feature lately is the absence of street lighting. It is said to lie due to the shortage, of carbide; the stocks are reserved for the usage of pri: vatc and indoor necessities.
Visitors from all parts of (lie district were present on Wednesday evenin;.' at the social promoted by the Catholics in aid of the Parish Fund. The stage, -which was set apart for eards, was comfortably furnished and decorated with tree lucerne and wattle bloai.oni, whilst the flag of "Erin" occupied n conspicuous place. Tn the supper room a liberal and dainty supper provided by the ladies of the congregation was spread on tables prettily decorated with lillies, daisies Rn.'l snowdrops. Mrs. O'Brien was responsible for the decoration and Mrs. \Y. -J. 8. Dudley had charge of Ihc supper, assisted by Mesdames ITodgi-.m, Ross, M.Uioney, .1. 'Fearer and Misses T)i>, Castro (3), IST. Callaghan, 'Davis and O'Brien. Items were given hy Mrs. Massey and Miss Field, of Stratford, and Miss Kelly, of Bmvera, who wore loudly applauded. The music was supplied' by Mr Cannell, extras being played by Mrs. Julian, Misses Hodgson, Jeffries, Clarke and Mr. L. Corkill. Messrs 1"). O'Sullivan anil I'. J. MeGrath acted as M.'sC.
Last Saturday the Oaonui school children played a football match against the local school, resulting in a win for Opunake. The Tfaweni. team did not. arrive to fulfil their fixture here to-day I hereby causing some little disappointment to the local footballers.
