CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From 0111' Own Correspondent). Eltham, July 31. The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held at Mr. Buekcrkige's offices last evening, Mr. J. L. Weir presiding over a good attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president said lie regretted the apathy shown by business people generally. Amongst the good work accomplished was the telephone hours extension and the carrying out of he telephone system to back parts of the district, 'which had been supported by the member for Kgmont and Mr. Broadfoot. postmaster. Two interesting addresses had been delivered (luring the year, one on "Taxation" by Mr, C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., and the other "Eltham" by the Hon. W. C. Carncross. As a result of Mr. Wilkinson's lecture lie had been requested to deliver the same in other parts of the electorate, and tliey were probably bettor posted in this information than any other part of tho Dominion. Mr. Weir also dealt, extensively with other matters, at the close being congratulated oil his interesting address. —Mr. Gow seconded the adoption of the report and balancesheet, which was carried. ABOLITION OF TOLL-GATES. This created a little discussion, and two resolutions were carried. One by Messrs Hill and Hurrell was: "That a public meeting be called by the Mayor to discuss the question," and the second by Messrs Bridge, and Gow, which thanked Mr. Wilkinson for the advocacy of the abolition of toll-gates, and supporting him in his efforts. SECOND DIVISION,
Th claims of the Scond Division were reviewed. The Chamber was generally sympathetic with the various (but not all) proposals, and on the motion of Messrs Stewart and Gow it was resolved to support the claim of the Second Division for adequate provision for dependents. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
The election of officers rsulted as follows:—President, Mr. J. L. Weir (re- | elected); vice-president, Mr. L. Hill (reelected) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. 11. G. Carman (re-elected); committee, 1 Messrs G. I). Uow, E. l'arrott, Ira .1. Bridger, H. Hurrell, G. Buckeridge. T. B. Crump, and 0. Flyger; auditor, ,T. l!nl lantvne. Messrs E. Parrott, J. O'Hagan and .T. Skipper were elected a sub-com-mittee to make suitable arrangements re hours of closing and days of special holidays. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers, and the chairman concluded the meeting. GENERAL. The Overseas Club here are ever on (he look-out for helping worthy causes. Just for the moment thev have ceased efforts on the tobacco fund, and concentrated on a social to gain funds for the army horses. The social is being held this" week, and as one member puts it, '•the proceeds of the evening's entertainment are to be directed towards the care and treatment of the dumb heroes of the war."
